Innova JC starts silat lessons to help foster racial harmony

" A junior college has become the first in Singapore to use the Malay art of self defence, Silat, during Physical Education lessons.

Innova JC has found a new way to foster racial harmony, and that is by using the Malay art of self defence, Silat, during Physical Education lessons. Silat was introduced as a compulsory sport of the Mixed Martial Arts Programme for PE lessons. About 95 students of various races from five classes are part of it. Apart from Silat, Wushu was also included in the 10-week programme.

I feel that this is an innovative yet effective way of inculcating the importance of racial harmony into the students' minds. If they just teach the students the importance of racial harmony verbally, most of the teachers' words will soon be forgotten after a while. Many students will not be paying attention to them in the first place as well. However, this method engages the students' interest and attention, yet at the same time fosters racial harmony into their minds. It thus successfully teaches the students the importance of racial harmony. At the same time, students will also be able to have fun. Hence, I feel that this method by Innova Junior College is very interesting and effective.
